Biscuits, Lard, and Butter - It Doesn't Get Much Better

A biscuit in the United States is a small bread with a firm browned crust and a soft interior.  Come to Hudson Heritage Farms Studio and learn to make Biscuits, Lard, and Fresh Butter.  Just in time for the Holidays.  Personal Chef, Sue Graves will be on hand to teach you how to make the best biscuits you will ever taste or serve on Saturday, November 1st from 1:00 - 3:00pm.  The cost is $25* and each participant will learn a little about the history of lard, butter, and biscuits, and leave the class with a small container of fresh lard.  Several biscuit recipes will be made, and Chef Graves biscuit handbook will be emailed to all participants.  Tea with biscuits will be served at the conclusion of the class. 

How to register:  Call or email the farm to get on the list.  Then send us your check to confirm your space.  Class sizes are limited.

*Please note our classes are non-refundable.  If we have a similar class scheduled at a future date we will try to accommodate you in it, but there is no guarantee.  We hope you understand that we hae this policy because we are a small operation and have to pay our instructors and buy supplies for all registered participants.

GrowSocial Marketing Workshop

In case you haven't heard yet, Glerin will be presenting a new free marketing workshop series that starts next week.  GrowSocial will kick off at 6:30pm Thursday, September 18th in South Hill, VA.  An encore presentation of the kickoff workshop will be held at 6:30pm Thursday, September 25 in Farmville.  The first workshop will be an overview of the major social media channels, explaining how they differ from each other, what they're used for, and how they can be used together in a coordinated way.

          As fall approaches and the gardening season winds down, there are still many chores left to be done.  Harvests are complete for some crops, leaving parts of the garden empty and susceptible to weeds.  In keeping with the practice of the right plant in the right place, gardeners may find that some plants should be moved to the right place.  Spring blooming bulbs will need to be planted soon.  All of these tasks require the use of tools.  Good tools make any job easier and well-maintained tools can last a lifetime.  Tools should be kept clean and sharp throughout the gardening season.  The homeowner can easily maintain gardening tools with a few simple steps.  Remove soil after each use.  Use a file to maintain the factory established edge.

          If you are not comfortable with the idea of sharpening your own hand tools, you are invited to bring them to the Halifax Farmers Market on September 13 from 8 to 11 am for the final Second Saturday with the Southside Master Gardeners for the 2014 season.  Master Gardeners will be available to help you and answer any gardening questions.  The Farmer's Market provides an opportunity to buy fresh produce and other goods from local growers.  For more information about the Master Gardener program, please call the Halifax Extension Office at 434-476-2147, visit their website at www.wwmga.org or e-mail ask@ssmga.org.

Bring a pot of your favorite chili and enter this event!  Entries accepted from 10:00-11:00 am with Judging commencing at 11:00am

This is a community event to celebrate and recognize our Veterans & Veteran Owned Businesses.  There is no charge to enter your chili recipe.  A prize will be awarded for the best overall chili in meat & veggie and a prize for the public's favorite chili.  Also, Any winning entry that uses a Hudson Heritage Farms Product in their recipe will win an additional prize from the farm. 

Three categories being judged:  Meat, Veggie, & Public's favorite

Attendees will be able to sample the various entries
