Community Clock Project Open House on August 7th

Community Clock Project Open House

The Town of Halifax and the Halifax Village Association will host an "open house" in the Halifax Town Hall, 70 South Main Street, starting at 5:30 pm on Wednesday August 7th to share with the community the design and plans for the new town clock purchased by the Halifax Village Association as part of the town's ongoing revitalization efforts

Hill studio planners and designers have been working with the Halifax Community Clock Committee and town staff to develop a phased design for a plaza at front of the Halifax Marketplace at 209 South Main Street to host a vintage-style clock acquired by the Halifa Village Association through their various fund-raising efforts.  The clock and surrounding plaza will be a wonderful new focal point on Main Street for the town, and will eventually serve as a multifunctional gathering spot.

Come learn about the process, see the most recent depictions of the town clock plaza design, and find out what next steps will be involved to construct this new centerpiece in historic downtown Halifax, the County Seat for over 230 years!

For more information, contact Halifax Town Hall, at 434-476-2343.

Divide and Conquer with Master Gardeners by Laverne Fuller

Perennials are plants that live more than two years.  Examples of some familiar perennials are Black eyed Susan, purple coneflower, hosta, daylillies and irises.  There are many more varieties.  Perennials are a great asset to the garden.  They provide an almost permanent element to the landscape and some gardeners strive to have beds made entirely of perennials for low maintenance.

Perennial gardens are not completely maintenance free, however.  Once a bed is established, the plants will spread and after a few years will need to be divided.  Plant division is important for several reasons.  The size of the plant can be controlled by division, a plant is healthier if it has room to grow and new plants are provided for your own garden or to share.  If you have a perennial bed in need of some TLD (tender, loving division) come to the Second Saturday at the Halifax Farmer's Market on August 10 at 9:30 a.m. for a special demonstrationon how to conquer your fear of plant division.  The Southside Master Gardeners will be at the market from 8 to 11 a.m. to provide information on how to establish a perennial garden or how to add perennials to your present landscape and of course to answer all your gardening questions.

While at the Halifax Farmers Market, don't miss the opportunity to visit the local vendors supplying cut flowers, fresh produce, organically grown meats and eggs and home baked sweeties.  If you have questions about the Master Gardener program or this activity please call the Halifax Extension Office at 434-476-2147, email This email address is being protected from spambots.
