Special Programs Planned at Library in February

We've got a number of special programs and events in February at both library branches.

 

AARP Representative
February 4 @ 1 pm at the South Boston Public Library
Meet and discuss issues with an AARP representative.

Barn Quilt Painting Class
February 23 @ noon @ the South Boston Public Library
Learn how to paint a barn quilt piece for display on your property or business.  
Materials will be provided.  Wear old clothes and bring a blow dryer.  The cost is $60.00 and you may register by calling the South Boston Public Library @ 575-4228.

Drop-In Valentine’s Day Party for Adults
February 14 @ 10:30 am at the Halifax Public Library
Stop in and celebrate Valentine’s Day with refreshments and prize drawings.
 

Earth 2.0 with Ron Miller
February 5 at 6 pm at the South Boston Public Library
Author, artist, and South Boston resident Ron Miller discusses exoplanets.

OWLS Valentine Party

OWLS stands for Older, Wiser, Learned, Seniors.  

Virginia Special Olympics
February 12 at 6:30 pm at the South Boston Public Library

Representatives from Special Olympics Virginia will be at the
library to discuss the great work of their organization.

The YMCA and Race Relations in the South

February 11 @  6 pm at the Halifax Public Library
Dr. Andrew Canady, Assistant Professor of History and Director of the Honors Program at Averett University, will be speaking at the Halifax Public Library.

We'll also have our regular monthly programs, such as PALS, Code Club, Tea and Book Discussion, Easy Exercise, and any more.

Nature & Gardening Programs Coming to Museum

ature and Gardening Programs coming to Museum

            The Southside Master Gardener Association will hold two programs at the South Boston – Halifax County Museum on Fridays February 15 and 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  These programs are free and open to the public but registration is requested and can be made by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or calling the Halifax Extension Office at 434-476-2147, option 0.

            On February 15, Master Naturalist JoAnn Jones will discuss the fragile but complex web of ecosystems that are required for successful Monarch butterfly habitat.  In its summer grounds, the Monarchs need milkweed as their larval plant, meaning that eggs are laid on milkweed and provide food for the hatched caterpillars.  During winter migration, the Monarchs travel to southwestern Mexico to overwinter among the oyamel fir trees.  Come learn how the Monarchs accomplish this astonishing and often perilous journey and learn what you can do to provide habitat in your own backyard.

            Bonnie Miles, certified bat rehabilitator and Master Naturalist, will present Bats! Be Afraid! on Friday February 22.  Bonnie will discuss why you don’t need to be afraid of bats but rather learn how important they are to successful ecosystems.  They provide an important service by possessing a huge appetite for bugs.  These important creatures are being threatened by many factors – some of which are in our control.  Learn what you can do to help protect bats.

The museum is located at 1540 Wilborn Avenue in South Boston. Light snacks will be served and Thyme to Eat, the new Master Gardener Cookbook, will be offered for sale at each session.  Hope to see you there!
