Preserving Produce Workshop at Farmers Market on May 4th 2013

Would you like to learn more about safely preserving the extra produce from your garden?  A food preservation workshop will be offered by Virginia Cooperative Extension at the Halifax Farmers Market on Saturday May 4th, 2013 at 10:00am.  Eric Bowen, Area Food Safety Specialist, will be discussing how to preserve fresh foods using pressure canner/hot water bath methods and the basics of food safety including bacteria and food spoilage, canning and equipment, and freezing.  Please call Chris Brown, Extension Agent, ANR at 434-476-2147 with any questions.

Farmers Market 2010 Season Grand Opening

Farmers Market Officials: Hughes, Satterfield, Shaughnessey and BarksdaleHalifax is gearing up to open its Farmer’s Market located in the former Farmers Foods parking lot on 209 South Main Street. The Grand Opening of the Market will take place Saturday June 26th starting at 8:00 a.m. Market days will be Friday from 9 a.m. until and Saturday from 7:30 a.m.-until, but Association vendors are welcome 6 days a week.

Town events coordinator Erin Shaughnessy and Denise Barksdale with the Town of Halifax are assisting the market in recruiting new vendors for the 2010 season, as well as signing up vendors from last year.

Shaughnessy is coordinating activities catering to children, families, supporters of fresh produce and local farmers and those who just enjoy gathering for live music, cooking demonstration, artistic appreciation, environmental stewardship or those just visiting with one another while helping to make the local economy thrive.
