    Occupying a site that has been used for court purposes since 1803, the Courthouse holds hundreds of thousands of documents relating to the people and property of Halifax County, Virginia. The court records go back to 1752, when Halifax County was cut off from Lunenburg. Read More

    Photo: Downtown Halifax (Houston) circa 1910 Halifax County was formed from Lunenburg in 1752, and the Town of Halifax has been the county seat since 1777. The courthouse town of Banister, named after the neighboring river, grew around the new courthouse. Called Banister Town during the Civil War, the town became Houston in 1890 to entice a new railroad, and after WWI changed its name to Halifax. Read More

Discover HalifaxVA Weekend Guide: March 10-12

March 10: Live Music at JB's, featuring Craig Hanson. 9 - Midnight March 10: Live Music at Main Street Cafe, featuring Public Consumption. 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. March 11: Sangria Saturday at Sans Soucy Vineyards. 1 - 7 p.m. Sangria, Wine, & Staunton River Brewing Company beer + food truck + live music = fantastic outing March 11: Second Saturday Family Art Day at The Prizery. 2 p.m. $10 per family (includes all supplies). Taught by Susi Robbins March 11: Karaoke at Main Street Cafe. 9 p.m.

On Stage... Halifax County is home to two extraordinary opportunities for live arts. Halifax County Little Theatre and The Prizery bring some of the biggest shows, family favorites, classics, and new and exciting ventures to the stage. The Prizery presents... HONK, Jr.! It is the musical story of Hans Christian Anderson's The Ugly Duckling. Great theatre event for the entire family March 17-26 I Have A Dream: The Life and Times of Martin Luther King, Jr. performed by The Virginia Repertory Theatre. Friday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m.
