Kelly Cherry, former Poet Laureate of Virginia, will be speaking at the South Boston Public Library on April 27 at 6:30 pm. Her latest book of poetry is entitled Quartet for J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Ms. Cherry will be reading selections from her new book on April 27. She will also have copies for sale and will be signing books after her reading.

This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available after the reading.

Town of Halifax Farmers Market Activities

The Town of Halifax Farmers Market located at 209 South Main Street in the historic Town of Halifax is open now every Saturday from 8am-Noon.  come enjoy the atmosphere and experience of the market while supporting our local farmers.  Buying local will ensure that you are getting lower prices and fresher produce all while helping to stimulate local economic growth and bring life into the downtown.  So remember to support our local farmers this season; and to, Buy Local - Eat Fresh!  If you are interested in becoming a vendor, applications are available at Halifax Town Hall, 70 South Main Street, call (434)476-2343 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Permit fee for the entire season at the Town of Halifax Farmers Market is only $35.00.  Weekly rate is $7.00

The Market also hosts and welcomes community members to participate in 1st Saturday Community Yard Sales.  Bring your yard sale items to sell during normal farmers market hours of 8am - Noon and turn your trash into cash.  The dates of remaining Community Yard Sales scheduled are July 6th, August 3rd, September 7th, and October 5th.  Spaces are $10 for a 10' x 10' space and one table provided by the market for the first 6 paid participants.

2nd Saturdays, the Master Gardeners provide various workshops at the market.  July 13th, join the Southside Master Gardener Association and the Southside Virginia Herb Society from 8 to 11am.  The Master Gardeners will lead you through the process of making a hypertufa container to take home.  Cost is $5 for each container.  Supplies will be provided.  The Herb Society will have an herbal tea tasting and be selling handmade jewelry, gourd birdhouses and herbal booklets on culinary and Biblical herbs.  On August 10th they will teach the correct way to divide perennials, and on September 14th they will provide free tool sharpening for small gardening tools during market hours of 8am - Noon. 

Also plan to join us as we celebrate Farmers Market week on Saturday, August 10th with a cooking demo hosted by Hudson Heritage Farms, using fresh USDA meat and locally grown produce and much more! 

Then new for the 2013 season there will be an Indoor Winter-Holiday Market held on Saturdays, December 7th, 14th, & 21st from 8am - Noon.  This is a great way to showcase what you have to offer for the holiday shoppers and is open to all artisans and crafters.
