TOWN OF HALIFAX FARMERS MARKET CELEBRATES
NATIONAL FARMERS MARKET WEEK
National Farmers Market Week is August 7-13, 2016. In celebration, on August 13th, the Town of Halifax Farmers Market will have kid’s activities, food on site, grilling demo with Hudson Heritage Farms, vendor samples, free recipes and Much More!
Southside Master Gardeners will be at the Market 8am-11am with a special demonstration at 9:30 on dividing perennials. The Master Gardeners will be dividing Solomon’s Seal and Bearded Iris, and will share the divisions with attendees as long as the divisions last. As always Master Gardeners will be available to answer all your questions.
Another special event will be a display of the Golden Leaf Quilters’ Guild’s Raffle Quilt at the Hudson Heritage Farm booth. The quilt has a patriotic theme consisting of red, cream and blue colors with “Home of the Free Because of the Brave” embroidered on the border. This is a perfect match since Hudson Heritage Farm is Veteran owned and their grass raised meat products carry the label Home Grown by Heroes. Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each or 6 for $5. Give your support to win this beautiful quilt that will benefit the South Boston-Halifax County Museum.
Farmers Markets are more than just an outlet for fresh produce and friendly farmers. According to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) statistics, these grassroots venues have increased in number by over 60% since 2009 to nearly 8,500 today. These markets preserve farmland, stimulate local economies, increase access to fresh nutritious food, improve community health, and promote sustainability. For example, growers selling locally create thirteen full time farm operator jobs per $1 million in revenue earned while those that do not sell locally only create three.
The Town of Halifax Farmers Market began in 2009, and currently has vendors selling a wide variety of products. On most Saturdays outside the market you can find fresh pasture raised meats including, pork, & beef, fresh vegetables & fruits, herbs, farm fresh eggs, fresh baked goods, herb infused olive oils, handmade butcher block cutting boards, homemade soaps and more. Then you venture inside the market where you will find lots of arts & crafts, dog grooming supplies, handmade jewelry, hand sewn items, antiques, great selection of books, professional photographer, great selection of upcycled furniture, Paparazzi jewelry, great smelling Scentsy products, handmade wreaths and Much More!.
