Re: PSA-Town of Halifax Property Taxes (Personal Property and Machine & Tool Mailing)
Public Service Announcement:
The Town of Halifax would like to notify residents, businesses and property owners that 2017 taxes for personal property and machine & tool are being mailed the week of November 13th, because of delays in receiving tax data in the preferred format from the Halifax County Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office. From 2009 to 2013, in response to town taxpayers’ preference, both the real estate and personal property/machine & tool tax separate notices were included in the same envelope mailed by the town. We apologize that continuing circumstances in the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office since 2014 require the town to send out two separate mailings. Because of this year’s disruption in service to our taxpayers, the due date for personal property and machine & tool tax will be extended until Monday February 5, 2018. Please check each item listed on the tax bill to ensure that it reflects accurately all personal property owned as of January 1, 2017. If any additions, deletions or adjustments need to be made, call 434-476-2343 so these corrections can be entered for the Town of Halifax billing information and then forwarded to the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office which gathers and provides the tax data to all the localities.

Please be reminded that the deadline for payment of total real estate tax remains due Tuesday December 5, 2017. In addition to the real estate tax due at that time, taxpayers may choose to remit personal property and machine & tool taxes by that date as well if that is their preference. If a receipt is desired, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. Payments made after the due date or postmark are subject to 10% Penalty and 10% Interest Per Annum. In addition to applicable penalties and interest, 30 days after the second notice has been mailed, all unpaid tax bills will be assessed a $15 administrative fee (real estate & personal property) and a $35 vehicle registration renewal hold placed by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for personal property. If ownership of property has been transferred during the current tax year, the bill should be forwarded to the responsible party.
